In a hysterical Oct. 30 editorial, “The Global War on the Jews,” signed by the Editorial Board, the Wall Street Journal ominously warns that Jews are not only under attack in Israel, and not only by Hamas, but around the world, including in the U.S. and Europe. What is happening is the “most modern of pogroms—global, televised, politicized,” showing what is at stake as Israel ramps up its “defensive war” against Hamas in Gaza. It warns that if Western nations don’t wake up and act, they could see a repeat of the Holocaust, which was to occur “never again,” and it will hit them directly.
In effect, according to the Journal, there is no place in the world where Jews are safe. Even Western governments seem unable to protect Jewish minorities; therefore Israel must defend itself “as the only safe home for Jewish people.” It goes on to list the many places internationally where anti-Semitic incidents are on the rise: Germany, London, the United States, and quotes the U.S. Anti-Defamation League which reported just last week a 388% increase in anti-Semitic incidents just for the period of Oct. 7-23, compared to a year ago.
The Journal insists there is no distinction between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism–no difference between what Hamas has done to innocent Israeli civilians, and what pro-Hamas protesters have said and done in Western streets. Yet, it complains, there are some Western intellectuals who would describe violence against Jews by Hamas or Hezbollah as just “anticolonial defiance.”
