The trial against former President Donald Trump for his actions on January 6, 2021 would be scheduled to begin on March 4, 2024, if Special Counsel Jack Smith had his way.
But Trump claims he is immune to prosecution for actions taken while he was president. Jack Smith tried to get the Supreme Court to decide on Trump’s claims of immunity. But his request was denied by the country’s highest court. This means that deciding on the issue of immunity may take quite some time, delaying the trial.
The Supreme Court’s refusal to grant certiorari to Smith is a major blow against his efforts to “defend democracy” through pre-election imprisonment of the leading Republican candidate.
