Kenyan Foreign Minister and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has praised Kenya-China relations as a fundamental driver of development since the country’s independence, 60 years ago. In an interview with Chinese journalists on Dec. 7, Mudavadi said, “We are celebrating 60 years of our independence and that is a period we have enjoyed cordial relations with the people of China.”
Mudavadi singled out the Mombasa-Naivasha SGR railroad as “a key BRI project,” along with several extensive highway projects in and around Nairobi. He also reiterated that Kenya was intent on extending the SGR to the Ugandan border and through to the capital of Kampala, an agreement for which was signed in July 2023, but has seen little action since then. The minister made additional comments regarding the development potential of the growing SGR transportation corridor, saying, “a number of areas that were not easily accessible in the past have now become accessible [and] a number of economic centers and hubs have also evolved around the railway.”
