A lengthy article appeared today in Xinhua focusing on the Monroe Doctrine, which celebrates its bicentennial this year. In China, and also prevalently in Latin America, the Monroe Doctrine is mistakenly viewed as the beginning of “American imperialism.” Over a month ago, Xinhua interviewed EIR’s Bill Jones on the matter, following a paper he had written for them, explaining the true nature of the Monroe Doctrine, inspired by then-U.S. Secretary of State John Quincy Adams for President James Monroe, and the way it was twisted and obfuscated by Theodore Roosevelt in the 20th century as a tool of “dollar diplomacy.”
