Statistics from the UN International Organization for Migration indicate that the death toll for migrants attempting the perilous journey across the Mediterranean to Europe is continuing its upward trajectory. From 2022 to 2023 the number of migrant deaths and disappearances had increased from 2,411 to 3,041. The number of deaths for the current year is already on pace to surpass those of 2023.
