January 5, 2024 (EIRNS)—On Dec. 29, Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry spokesman Aibek Smaddiyarov announced that the Afghan Taliban would be removed from the Kazakh list of terrorist organizations. Kazakhstan had designated them as a terrorist organization in 2005. Of some note, in September 2023, some 300 Afghan businessmen and Taliban representatives attended a business forum in Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana. Afghanistan committed in 2023 to important contracts to import wheat from Kazakhstan. Many dozens of Afghan students are studying in Kazakhstan. And there are other types of increasing engagement between the two nations.
