Presidents Xi and Biden Spoke Commemorating 45 Years of Diplomacy

On Monday, Jan. 1, the American and Chinese Presidents spoke by phone on the 45th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic relations. This recalls the agreement signed in December 1978 to begin their formal establishment of diplomatic relations on Jan. 1, 1979.

President Xi Jinping evoked the “San Francisco vision” which he said was laid out when the two leaders met on Nov. 15, 2023 on the sidelines of the APEC meeting in San Francisco, and said that both should “earnestly implement the important common understandings and outcomes reached by the two heads of state, and take concrete actions to promote the stable, healthy and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations,” according to a People’s Daily report .
