At the Antwerp European Industry Summit on Feb. 22, big companies such as Germany’s BASF called for an “Industry Deal” to accompany the Green Deal, as a priority task for the next EU Commission formed after the June elections for European Parliament.
“We need to keep industry in Europe, because industry will deliver the climate solutions Europe needs,” the summit declared. In the 2023 State of the Union Address, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had said, “As we enter the next phase of the European Green Deal, one thing will never change…. We will keep supporting European Industry throughout this transition.” This needs to be a European approach, instead of 27 different national incentives, by keeping and strengthening the integrity of the internal market while better keeping global competition to account.
