Ursula von der Leyen, the most hated European Commission president in history, managed to have her party, Germany’s CDU, endorse her candidacy for a second mandate. This, after having caused the current devastating economic crisis in Germany, through the EU’s anti-Russian sanctions and her Green Deal policies. In order to avoid a defeat at the polls, von der Leyen won’t run in the June European Parliament elections.
Evidently, the CDU expects the same coalition in the European Parliament that appointed her in 2019, to again win a majority in June. The endorsement for von der Leyen, however, will antagonize many CDU voters (and voters of its sister party CSU, which has endorsed her) among its traditional Mittelstand and farmer constituencies.
