More and Expanded Farmers Protests in Spain and Eastern Europe

In spite of national concessions and the promise by Spain’s agriculture minister’s to lobby with the EU Commission to extract changes to the its policy, the farmers’ organization decided not to cancel its nationwide protest actions: on Feb. 21, the farmers will gather in Madrid. The following day, they plan to blockade the ports of Algeciras, Spain’s largest, and of Valencia.

As Euroactiv reports, farmers in Eastern Europe are also coordinating protest actions for next week. Representatives of agricultural organizations from Central and Eastern European countries met in Poland on Feb. 13 to agree on organizing joint protests against EU agriculture policy on Feb. 22.

Czech Chamber of Agriculture spokeswoman Barbora Pánková told Euractiv that the international protests have been agreed on by delegations from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Lithuania and Latvia. “Other European countries have been invited to join,” she added. The protests will take place at border crossings with Ukraine. No further details were given.
