The World Health Organization estimates that the total number of Palestinian casualties—killed, wounded or missing and presumed dead—exceeds 100,000. The figure makes up 4.3% of Gaza’s 2.3 million population. Dr. Rik Peeperkorn, WHO representative for the occupied Palestinian territory (OPT), reported these figures from Jerusalem to the weekly WHO briefing on Feb. 2, saying that the rest of the population face dire circumstances. As reported by Xinhua, Peeperkorn said people are struggling to secure their basic needs of safety, food, health and warmth. Central Gaza is witnessing an escalation of hostilities, further crippling access to existing health facilities, he said.
