2023 Was the Deadliest Year on Record for Migrant Deaths

March 12, 2024 (EIRNS)—According to a March 6 press release by the UN Organization for Migration (IOM), 2023 was the deadliest year for migrant deaths since 2014, the year the IOM began keeping records. Based on data collected by the IOM’s Missing Migrant Project, “At least 8,565 people died on migration routes worldwide in 2023….” This is a 20% increase from the 7,141 migrant deaths in 2022. Since 2014, a total of 56,764 migrant deaths have been recorded, although the IOM believes the actual number is more than likely much higher “due to challenges in data collection particularly in remote areas.”
