March 30, 2024 (EIRNS)—Jonathan King and Richard Krushnic, members of the Nuclear Disarmament Working Group of Mass Peace Action, who write frequently on the costs of nuclear weapons production and deployment, warn in Truthout that President Joe Biden “Is Quietly Funding Nuclear Weapons Upgrades That Could Imperil the Planet.” They charge that Biden is largely keeping quiet about the large amounts of money his administration is putting into the nuclear arsenal because he’s worried that “these expenditures will be recognized as the giant pork barrel that they are.” They cite analyst William Hartung reporting, for example, that “The top 11 contractors working on the new [Sentinel] ICBM spent more than $119 million on lobbying in 2019 and 2020 and employed 380 lobbyists.”
