March 11, 2024 (EIRNS)—Chinese Special Representative for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui held a meeting with Thomas Bagger, State Secretary of Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, on March 9 in Berlin. Li briefed Bagger on his tour of European countries, to contribute to resolving the Ukraine crisis. Before Germany, Li had been in Russia on March 2, in EU headquarters in Brussels, in Poland, and in Ukraine. Li will now travel to France.
There are differing reports about the important matter of convening a peace conference. Germany’s Foreign Office reported today that Bagger strongly put to Li Hui that China should attend the intended peace conference this summer that Switzerland is hosting. It is very much promoted by Ukraine and NATO nations. Its backers say they are aiming for all nations to attend.
However, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has put out quotes from Li Hui himself offering a peace conference to be jointly sponsored by China and Germany, when Li talked to Secretary Bagger. TASS today quotes Li, “The conflict and confrontation risk further escalation and do not meet common interests of the international community, including China and Germany. China is ready to support jointly with Germany the idea of convening a peace conference in due time, given equal involvement of all parties, in order to pave the way for a ceasefire as soon as possible and put an end to the hostilities,” the Chinese diplomat asserted.
