Netanyahu ‘Fuming’ Over Washington’s Intelligence Report

March 13, 2024 (EIRNS)—A “very senior” Israeli official issued a statement yesterday, according to the Times of Israel, with a harsh message to Washington, in reaction to the report the previous day from the U.S.’s Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Annual Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community. That report had dared to state the obvious: “Distrust of Netanyahu’s ability to rule has deepened and broadened across the public from its already high levels before the war, and we expect large protests demanding his resignation and new elections. A different, more moderate government is a possibility.”

While the DNI was hardly news—as large protests for new elections to dump Netanyahu have been going on for over a year now—the statement from the unidentified “very senior” official read: “Those who elect the prime minister of Israel are the citizens of Israel and no one else. Israel is not a protectorate of the U.S. but an independent and democratic country whose citizens are the ones who elect the government. We expect our friends to act to overthrow the terror regime of Hamas and not the elected government in Israel.”
