March 10, 2024 (EIRNS)—Sweden and Canada have said they will resume aid payments to UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. Sweden said that as the investigation into Israel’s claims about UNRWA staff supporting Hamas is being investigated, they will restore funding in the meantime. Canada said on March 9 that it would restart funding for UNRWA while investigations into the agency’s staff continue.
The UN is investigating, and France’s foreign minister is leading a review.
Israel responded that the move “is a serious mistake that constitutes tacit agreement and support by [Ottawa and Stockholm] to ignoring the involvement of UNRWA employees in terrorist activity.”
