11 Georgia Legislators Issue Letter To Oppose Excessive Force Against Students

April 27, 2024 (EIRNS)—On April 25, at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, students and some professors were treated to “Jim Crow"-style “excessive force” while demonstrating for a Palestinian ceasefire. The tactics drew the ire of 11 Georgia state legislators who issued a letter condemning “the use of extreme anti-riot tactics by Georgia State Patrol, including tasers and gas” against the demonstrators. The six state representatives and five state senators who issued the statement described the police actions as “a dangerous escalation to protests which were by all accounts peaceful and nonviolent.” At least two professors, one of whom was simply using her phone’s camera to film what was happening, along with 15 students and non-students were arrested. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp issued a statement defending law enforcement.
