April 9, 2024 (EIRNS)—During his morning press conference today, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, popularly known as AMLO, showed short video clips of the “vile and authoritarian” raid on Mexico’s Embassy in Quito, Ecuador, on April 5. One of the clips shows a policeman pointing a gun at Chargé d’Affaires Roberto Canseco, who is not a young man, and then throwing him to the ground. “These are very painful scenes of the mistreatment of one of our diplomats,” AMLO said. Canseco was later seen wearing an orthopedic collar because of the wounds police inflicted to his neck.
AMLO reported that he had instructed his Foreign Secretary Alicia Barcena to show these clips at today’s Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) meeting of foreign ministers. “We are Juaristas [as in Benito Juárez],” AMLO said. “Nothing by force, but everything according to reason and the law…. And as I always say, we’re not authoritarian, we’re not fascists, we don’t think problems are solved by force. It’s just that we cannot remain silent in the face of the assault suffered by our diplomatic representation in Ecuador.” That, he said, is why Mexico is filing a suit at the International Court of Justice.
