D.C. Police Refuse To Remove Peaceful Protesters at GWU

April 27, 2024 (EIRNS)—Despite repeated calls from the George Washington University campus police and university officials, the Washington, D.C. police refused to remove peaceful protesters in the early morning hours of Friday, April 26, according to the Washington Post. The protest took place in GWU’s “The Yard” which is about five blocks west of the White House. The argument from GWU officials was that the area was all private property, but the D.C. police, after consulting with police headquarters and the Mayor’s office, said that there was “no compelling reason” to remove peaceful protesters. The D.C. police added that if any violent groups try to join the protest, they would be happy to stop the violence. D.C. police kept a small presence during the night to protect the students who wanted to camp out overnight. The president of the student government said that she saw student protesters at other universities “brutally” removed and was concerned that the GWU administration was trying to incite similar violence against her fello students.
