EU Watchdog Warns, Do Not Reduce Dependence on Russian Gas

April 20, 2024 (EIRNS)—The EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER), warned not to reduce EU dependence on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). This warning has two breaking news: 1) the warning itself and 2) the revelation that after 14 rounds of sanctions, the EU is still dependent on Russian LNG.

Sanctions against Russia have achieved the result that the EU buys less pipeline gas from Moscow, but has replaced part of that gas with LNG, paying more.

Now, demolishing the EU narrative, ACER warns that imports of Russian LNG remain a source of energy security for the EU and should only be reduced in “gradual steps” to avoid disruptions in supply, in a report published April 19.
