April 26, 2024 (EIRNS)—The expansion of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) was, in the words of Sen. Ron Wyden, “one of the most dramatic and terrifying expansions of government surveillance authority in history.”
This provision had previously allowed intelligence agencies to seek out information on foreign nationals by requiring “electronic communications service providers” to use their technical means to make available the communications in question, without the need for a warrant.
