An Israeli missile strike. UNICEF/Eyad El Baba

April 1, 2024 (EIRNS)—Israeli missiles have struck the consular section of Iran’s Embassy in Damascus, Syria, killing an IRGC commander and a half dozen other people. “Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi and his deputy, Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, were killed in the Israeli attack on Monday,” reports Iran’s Press TV.

Syria’s official news agency SANA reports on the strikes, quoting from a military source: “The Israeli enemy launched an air aggression from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting the Iranian consulate building in Damascus. Our air defense responded to the aggression’s missiles and shot down some of them. The aggression led to the destruction of the entire building and the martyrdom and injury of everyone inside, and work is underway to recover the bodies.”

Is the intention to draw Hezbollah into the spreading conflict, to force even more direct United States participation?
