April 27, 2024 (EIRNS)—At this moment when students across the country are showing the true meaning of the term, “moral courage,” Morehouse College is showing “moral cowardice,” by inviting President Biden to give the commencement speech, wrote Black Studies professor Jared Loggins (a Morehouse alum) in an op-ed yesterday in The Guardian. Loggins continues that in Gaza 34,000 are dead, 72,000 are injured, 1 million are displaced, and mass graves are uncovered, yet officially the White House says that it can find “no evidence” of genocide.
Especially Morehouse College, the alma mater of Dr. Martin Luther King, which has a statue of Dr. King in the center of campus, puts a silhouette of Dr. King on college brochures, has its chapel named after King, and has the Woodruff Library where the Dr. King papers are preserved, cannot be allowed to disrespect King’s commitment to non-violent action and anti-war advocacy. Dr. King’s true strength was moral leadership, and to invite Biden “shows moral cowardice,” wrote Professor Loggins. The group, Faculty for Justice in Palestine wrote a statement that reads, “Any college or university that gives its commencement stage to President Biden in this moment is endorsing genocide.”
