Palestine’s Bid for Full UN Membership Backed by Russia, Not So Much by U.S.

April 9, 2024 (EIRNS)—"Russia fully supports the initiative of the Palestinian side to renew its application for Palestine’s full membership in the UN. The fate of this application will become a measure of humanity and civilization of the modern-day world,” Russia’s first deputy envoy to the UN Dmitry Polyanskiy said at a UN General Assembly meeting yesterday reported TASS . “We urge all members of the international community to support Palestine’s application for UN membership.”

Malta, which holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council in April, has referred Palestine’s bid for full UN membership to the council’s membership committee for consideration this month. “So we have agreed that the committee has to deliberate within the month of April,” said Vanessa Frazier, Malta’s UN ambassador. “And we all recognize that any member of the council may decide to present their solution for membership.”

Palestine’s application should be considered “within, say, a few days, a week or two,” Russian UN Permanent Representative Vassily Nebenzia told reporters. “We do not plan to allow this issue to drag on indefinitely, as perhaps some other members of the council would like.”
