April 4, 2024 (EIRNS)—Chef José Andrés, founder of the World Central Kitchen (WCK), was all over the news media in Israel and internationally yesterday, reportedly in tears in at least one case, demanding a stop to the war and a stop to Israel’s starvation campaign against Gaza. Yet, of special note, he expressed his hope for something better. Beginning with [an op-ed](https://ww

It is better than killing aid workers who coordinate their movements with the IDF…. The Israeli government needs to open land routes to food and medicine today. It needs to stop killing civilians and aid workers today. It needs to start the long journey to peace today. In the worst conditions, after the worst terrorist attack in its history, it’s time for the best of Israel to show up. You cannot save the hostages by bombing every building in Gaza. You cannot win this war by starving an entire population.”
Andrés rejected Netanyahu’s feeble explanation that the missile attacks killing his seven WCK aid workers was an accident of war, writing: “Prime Minister Netanyahu has said, ‘This happens in wartime.’ But the air strikes on our convoy were not just some unfortunate mistake in the fog of war. It was a direct attack on clearly marked vehicles whose movements were known by the IDF. It was also the direct result of his government’s policy to squeeze humanitarian aid to desperate levels.”
He repeated many of the same points in other interviews, including one with Israel’s Channel 12. There he called the strike on the WCK convoy a “direct attack.” But he also continued to stress that Israelis are better than their government. “I know Israelis. I have many friends that are Israelis and Jewish. I know Israelis, they are better than this war being waged. I know that they are better than blocking food and medicines to civilians,” he said, reported the Times of Israel. With a modest echo of Abraham Lincoln, he stated: “I do believe Israel and the Israeli people are better than that. Let’s bring out our best angels today. Let’s make sure we stop the continuous killing of everything that moves in Gaza.”
