Wide International Condemnation of Ecuador's Assault on Mexico's Embassy

April 6, 2024 (EIRNS)—The violent assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito, Ecuador on the evening of April 5 to capture Ecuador’s former Vice President Jorge Glas, has been met with universal condemnation in Ibero-America and beyond, including from governments not particularly friendly to Mexico. The violation of international law and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations is so flagrant, that it cannot be ignored. Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has issued a formal call to Honduran President Xiomara Castro, President Pro Tempore of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), to “convene an extraordinary summit of the group to address the serious matter of the violation of the Vienna Convention.”

Throughout Ibero-America, virtually every government issued a statement. Even the right-wing governments of Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay found the violation of the Vienna Convention unacceptable. The Presidents of Bolivia, Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, Peru and Chile all issued statements expressing their solidarity with Mexico and condemnation of Ecuador’s action. The Nicaraguan government broke diplomatic relations with Ecuador. The Secretary General of the Organization of American States Luis Almagro urged the Mexican and Ecuadorian governments to engage in dialogue, but also convened a meeting of the OAS Permanent Council to address the crisis.
