Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, announced that Russia and China have agreed to establish a joint commission for developing the Northern Sea Route. Their decision involves Russia’s Rosatom and the Chinese Minister of Transport. “Our task is to create in the shortest possible time a joint program for expanding Chinese transit along the Northern Sea Route, as well as for a number of other projects in the interests of using this global artery, which, of course, has enormous development potential,” Likhachev said.
Opened to international shipping in 1991, the Northern Sea Route traverses the Russian Arctic, connecting European and Far Eastern ports, and spanning 5,600 km. Rosatom, managing nuclear icebreakers and a floating nuclear power station, was tasked with developing the Northern Sea Route in 2018.
