Chinese and Ukrainian Researchers Publish Paper on Near-Earth Asteroids

China and Ukraine have been working together on the issue of planetary defense. While it is unclear how the war in Ukraine may have affected this important cooperation, researchers from the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory and the Mykolaiv Astronomical Observatory in Ukraine have published a paper in the April 2024 issue of The Astronomical Journal on new methods in observing some of these fast-moving bodies, using a method called rotating drift scan.

Many observatories are involved in looking for these potentially dangerous objects, but the speed at which they move can sometimes blur the image received. This new method would use a charge-couple device technique (CCD) camera that can use time-delay integration imaging, which is often used in situations with low lighting or fast moving events.
