Calls to decouple from China have switched to using the language of “de-risking.” But according to a leading German manufacturer, “For German companies, investing in China is part of de-risking.”
In the context of German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s remarks of economic warfare against China, during her just-concluded trip to Australia and New Zealand, on May 5 the Berlin website “Table.Briefings” newsletter for China interviewed Gerald Pörschmann, a leading German official of the Future Alliance for Mechanical Engineering (Zukunftsallianz Maschinenbau e.V.). He endorses a dynamic response of German companies engaged in China, instead of punitive tariffs against Chinese companies as considered by the EU Commission.
