Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin is moving quickly after the all-important summit meeting of Presidents Vladimir Putin of Russia and Xi Jinping of China in Beijing on May 16-17, to gear up the Russian economy with the advanced technology focus the two Presidents had emphasized. Attending a conference in Nizhny Novgorod on May 21 on “Digital Industry of Industrial Russia,” Mishustin noted that half of all Russian companies are shifting over to domestically-produced software, and said that Russia was in the process of developing more advanced software. This is a move to advance the industry as well as to reduce dependence on foreign companies. He also invited Iran, which uses Microsoft and Oracle technology, to learn about the Russian software capabilities.

Mishustin also held a conference on achieving technological sovereignty in photonics and laser technology. He noted that laser technology is already being widely used in machine tools, electronic engineering, and medical instrumentation, and increasingly more often in telecommunications and agriculture. “Sensors, displays and projections are made on their basis,” he said.

“Last year, during a working trip to Sarov, we launched a laser fusion research facility. There are three such facilities around the world, and this one is unparalleled in terms of power. Of course, it represents a concentration of the most advanced technologies and the result of the efforts of a large team of specialists. It is already used to conduct unique research in plasma physics, which will help us significantly expand the line of our own high-tech products.
