Russia’s nuclear energy company Rosatom stated that top officials from Russian and Indian nuclear agencies met today and discussed expanding cooperation in the nuclear field beyond power generation. Director-general of the Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation Aleksey Likhachev met with the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty. Central to their discussions was Rosatom’s Pilot Demonstration Energy Complex, being developed under the “Proryv” (“Breakthrough”) project, designed to create, according to RT, “a new technological platform for a closed nuclear fuel cycle and address the challenges of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste.”
Likachev said: “We are ready for serious expansion of the cooperation with India in the field of using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.” He described Russian-designed high-capacity nuclear power units in India, land-based and floating low-power generation projects, cooperation in the nuclear fuel cycle area, and nuclear technologies for other (non-power) applications.
