The Israeli evacuation orders for part of Rafah followed yesterday’s Hamas-claimed rocket attack that killed 3 IDF troops and wounded 11. Most of the rockets struck an area where troops were gathered on the Israeli side of the border wall, not far from the Kerem Shalom border crossing, which has been used to deliver thousands of truckloads of humanitarian aid to Gaza amid the war, reported the Times of Israel. The soldiers had been guarding military equipment that was brought to the area for the IDF’s planned offensive in Rafah. The military was investigating why the Iron Dome air defense system did not engage the barrage. The Kerem Shalom crossing was closed immediately afterwards though other crossings remain open.
