Jordan announced it would jointly host, along with Egypt and the United Nations, a June 11 international emergency conference for an urgent humanitarian response to the crisis in Gaza. According to Egyptian daily Al Ahram on May 31, the conference will be held at the invitation of Jordanian King Abdullah II, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Heads of state and government and leaders of international humanitarian organizations are being invited to attend. The gathering seeks to identify ways to bolster the international community’s response to the humanitarian catastrophe endured by some 2.3 million Palestinians across the Gaza Strip and secure a commitment for a collective coordinated response to address the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Since early May there has been no humanitarian aid for the population, who are facing famine in Gaza, that has entered through the Rafah crossing.
