Support for Afghanistan—Russia Backs Aid to Farmers Not Growing Opium Poppy, India Cites Chabahar Port

At the UN Security Council session June 21, “Situation in Afghanistan,” Russia, India and other envoys reported on engagement and support for Afghanistan.

Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia made a point of saying that there should be international support for the Afghan farmers who have stopped growing opium poppy, and need more assistance than Kabul can provide. He stated that, “The efforts made by the Taliban in this regard are not enough, and comprehensive regional and international assistance is required, including through the UNODC. Support for Afghan farmers remains key.”
