Syria and Türkiye Edging Towards Restoring Relations

Relations between Syria and Türkiye could soon be on the way to normalization after almost a decade of estrangement, during the domestic war against the government of President Bashar Assad.

''Syria is open to all initiatives regarding Syrian-Turkish relations as long as they are based on respect for the sovereignty of the Syrian State over all its territory and the fight against all forms of terrorism and its organizations,” Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on June 26 during a meeting on June 26 with Russian President’s special envoy Alexander Lavrentiev, reported the official news agency SANA.

Damascus has always responded positively to such initiative, Assad added according to a report on the Syrian Presidential website. Assad also fully endorsed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s peace initiative between Russia and Ukraine.
