Besides Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, another wild card coming into next week’s NATO summit in Washington may be Bulgaria—with the qualification that, as a caretaker government, its impact may be limited. TASS reported yesterday that Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev of the Caretaker Government, will put forward the idea of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine at the July 9-11 NATO summit, in which Sofia may act as a mediator. Glavchev told Bulgarian National Radio: “I do believe, since it was discussed yesterday at a plenary session [of Bulgaria’s parliament], that we should propose to hold peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, in which Bulgaria could act as a mediator.”
Nevertheless, Bulgaria National Radio added, Glavchev doubted that Bulgaria could expect to have a mediator’s status as both sides would have to be willing to accept this. He emphasized that the talks should be held under the UN Charter and in accordance with international law.
