Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Botswana are about to sign an agreement within weeks on a major rail and port project that includes upgrading the Beira-Zimbabwe- Botswana railway system and constructing a new deep-water mineral port at Matutuine, in southern Mozambique. The project will serve to develop Botswana’s vast coal reserves for export.
“We are working with our brothers in Zimbabwe so that we can link the Machipanda line to Zimbabwe,” Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi is quoted in a July 10 article in Sputnik. Nyusi added there will be discussions among the three countries “in the coming weeks.”
