An AP article reported on the language in the NATO final communiqué which calls China a “decisive enabler” of Russia’s war against Ukraine, and provided enthusiastic commentary from various Western China-hands.
Danny Russel, a former Assistant Secretary of State for Asia, who is now vice president for international security and diplomacy at the Asia Society Policy Institute, called the new wording by NATO “an extraordinary step,” especially since it couched in the argument that Beijing continues to pose “systemic challenges” to European interests and security.
Max Bergmann, director of the Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, described the attack on China in the communiqué as “highly significant.” And NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said it was the first time all NATO allies have made this point against China so clearly in an agreed document.
