Speaking out against NATO and its Ukraine war, Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico on July 11, in an address to his nation, is reported to have declared that “Slovakia will not accept Ukraine’s accession to NATO.” And further, he said, “I understand Ukraine’s wishes. It is a sovereign country, but Ukraine’s accession to NATO means a guaranteed Third World War.”

Fico was nearly killed in an assassination attempt in Handlova on May 15.

Appearing in one of his well-known videos, Prime Minister Fico remarked, “The West preaches ‘the only right opinion’ about the war in Ukraine. They support the war to the last Ukrainian soldier.” As for Slovakia’s participation at the just-concluded NATO meeting, he said, “In the spirit of our sovereign position, we prepared for the NATO summit in Washington, D.C., which was attended by the Minister of Defense [Robert Kaliňák] and the Minister of Foreign Affairs [Juraj Blanár] of Slovakia.” But, “when I agreed on the text of the final declaration, I insisted that Ukraine’s accession to NATO should be made possible only if all NATO members agree,” and speaking for Slovakia he opposed it.
