On Monday morning, July 1, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that former President Donald Trump cannot be indicted along the lines as outlined in the recent case which held him guilty for seeking to overturn the 2020 election, claiming he sought to defraud voters and the United States. The court ruled that the former President has some degree of criminal immunity for acts which were committed while in office, although Chief Justice Roberts specified that this does not mean Trump has “absolute immunity,” as he has sometimes claimed.
The case has not been entirely dismissed, however, and will now be sent back to lower courts to make final rulings, in accordance with the Supreme Court’s finding. But since this process which will likely push the case back until after the November 5 elections, it has sent many into conniption fits, who had hoped Donald Trump could be removed from the running through legal means.
