Taiwan Backs Away from Confrontation with Beijing over Detained Fishing Boat

China’s detention of a Taiwan fishing boat near the mainland coast (near the Taiwan-controlled) island of Kinmen led to a confrontation between Taiwan coast guard vessels and as many as seven Chinese coast guard vessels. Taiwan backed off the confrontation, but demanded the return of the boat and the crew. China reported that the boat had “violated a fishing moratorium in Chinese waters by trawling in a forbidden zone,” and “also was using nets that were finer than allowed by Chinese law.”

AP reports that “Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said 20 Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force planes crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait” between July 2 and 3. The median line is not a border.
