Ukraine Tells Orbán That They Didn't Give Him Approval To Talk with Putin

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement today announcing that Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had gone to Moscow without their approval. The statement on their site reads:

“Regarding Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s visit to Moscow on July 5, 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that the decision to make this trip was made by the Hungarian side without approval or coordination with Ukraine.

“We remind that the principle of ‘no agreements on Ukraine without Ukraine’ remains inviolable for our country and call on all states to strictly adhere to it.”

Apparently, the idea that Ukraine cannot be excluded from agreements about Ukraine also means that other countries talking or strategizing about how to approach Ukraine about an agreement is not to be permitted. To invoke Shakespeare, perhaps “the lady doth protest too much.”
