Chinese Experts Warn of Potential Escalation to World Nuclear War

In an Aug. 12 Global Times article on the Aug. 12 attack and fire at Russia’s Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, two Chinese experts warned strongly of the dangers of global nuclear war.

Cui Heng, a scholar from the Shanghai-based China National Institute for SCO International Exchange and Judicial Cooperation, told Global Times that the current situation shows that the possibility of a large-scale nuclear leak, caused by an attack on a nuclear power plant, is increasing. The conflict, he said, has become increasingly complex and chaotic, which made it even more difficult to grasp the real situation immediately and avoid miscalculation of the situation. In this case, the risk of nuclear power plants being attacked, whether intentionally or not, has become greater.

Zaporozhye NPP in Energodar, has a capacity of 6 GW, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.
