On Friday, August 24, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to Kiev and met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The visit follows Modi’s visit to Moscow last month where he met with President Vladimir Putin, an event which garnered much howling from Western nations. However, Modi and Indian officials have defended their “non-aligned” position, and continue to insist on diplomacy as the only end to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

During his press conference with Zelenskyy today, Modi reemphasized India’s stance: “The road to resolution can only be found through dialogue and diplomacy. And we should move in that direction without wasting any time. Both sides should sit together to find a way out of this crisis…. I want to assure you that India is ready to play an active role in any efforts towards peace. If I can play any role in this personally, I will do that I want to assure you as a friend.”
