Ukrainian forces which launched a large-scale incursion into Russia’s Kursk region on Aug. 6 still remain up to 10 miles inside Russian territory, and are engaged in pitched battles against Russian forces. According to Russian media such as Sputnik, Ukraine sent “as many as 10,000 troops and 600 armored vehicles into the area, sparking off fierce battles with Russian forces. Russia redeployed large-scale reserves in the area to fend off and contain the attacks, evacuating civilians and engaging in the large-scale bombing and shelling of Ukrainian positions using aircraft and artillery.”
According to other Russian media accounts, Georgian, Polish, British and French mercenaries are reportedly part of the mix of the invading forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that their military actions included: Russian air defense systems destroyed four Ukrainian Tochka-U missiles over the Kursk region; military personnel destroyed a T-80 tank with a Lancet loitering munition; and planes and helicopters were used to destroy Ukrainian weapons and personnel concentrations inside Russia.
