Thousands gathered in Doha, Qatar, for the funeral of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, killed while attending the Iranian presidential inauguration in Tehran. The body was first presented to an overwhelming crowd in Tehran, where the Israeli action is viewed as an attack on their sovereignty. The region is waiting with bated breath, pending Iran’s almost certain retaliation.
Mourners at the Tehran ceremony included Khaled Meshaal, the likely new leader of Hamas. Other senior Hamas leaders also attended. Israel had previously conducted strikes against Haniyeh’s family, killing his children and his grandchildren. For Israel, the “rule of law” is indeed the law of the jungle.
There was also a memorial service in Ankara, Türkiye, at the Haghia Sophia Grand Mosque. At the Turkish Embassy in Tel Aviv, the flag was lowered to half-staff, which has infuriated members of Israel’s right-wing government, who demanded that the Turkish diplomats be asked to leave.
