Russian Ambassador Slams the ‘Modern U.S.’ Standards of Free Speech in Wake of Simes Raid

Following the news of the raid on the Virginia house of Dimitri Simes, Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Anatoly Antonov ridiculed the U.S.’s persecution of dissenting voices, especially those who challenge the prevailing Russophobia. Simes, who is the host of “Big Game” broadcast on Russia’s Channel One, had his Rappahannock County, Virginia home raided by the FBI on Aug. 13. TASS reported on Antonov’s comments published by Russia’s diplomatic mission.

“Local ruling circles have definitively embarked on the path of total censorship. Freedom of speech in the modern United States is sacred only if this word is pro-American. All dissenters are subject to political inquisition, especially when it concerns those who fight against the imposition of one-sided and biased views on Russia,” Antonov said. Washington “is steeped in double standards in the area of democracy and freedom of speech.”
