Ukraine Dropping Prohibited Mines in Russia’s Kursk Region

This morning, the Russian military news site Avia.pro cited the Russian Telegram channel called Two Majors reporting that Ukrainian forces are dropping Lepostok anti-personnel mines, among other things, in the settlement of Tyotkino, close to the Ukrainian border about 70 km west of Sudzha, in the Kursk region. Ukrainian forces made these mines, also known as petal or butterfly mines, infamous in the summer of 2022 when they were scattering them all over civilian areas of Donetsk city. Several civilians died from stepping on these mines and more than 100 were maimed.

Lepostok mines are banned by the 1997 Ottawa Treaty, which outlaws the production and stockpiling of anti-personnel mines and mandates their destruction. Ukraine is a signatory to the treaty but reported having 3.3 million of the mines in its stockpile in 2021.
