Ukraine’s controversial Ambassador to Brazil Andrii Melnyk, an outspoken admirer of Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera, takes umbrage at the fact that Brazil is working with China for peace. In an interview with Ukrainska Pravda, he was at pains to explain his failure to stop Brazil from joining with China in a six-point peace plan for the Ukraine conflict. He evidently thought he had them onboard with Ukraine’s so-called “Peace Plan” conference in Switzerland.
He explained to Ukrainska Pravda that he could not control the Brazilians: “The Brazilians did not share this idea with us. And this is a challenge for us—the lack of trust when you go to a diplomatic adviser, have a great conversation, ask what the plans are and what the position will be [at the Peace Summit], but only then do you see that they are actually preparing an alternative way.”
Ukrainska Pravda went on to summarize the ulterior motives that Melnyk offered, that a joint peace plan is mutually beneficial for China and Brazil, as China “understands that any plan it prepares will not be supported by the collective West if it is exclusively a Chinese plan,” while Brazil wants, with China’s help, to play a role as a world leader.
