U.S. Must Apologize to Japanese People for Atomic Bombings, Says Lawmaker Suzuki

The United States must apologize to the Japanese people for the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Muneo Suzuki, a member of the upper house of the Japanese parliament, declared.

“Last year, the G7 summit was held in Hiroshima. Then President [Joe] Biden should have said that the fact that the United States had used nuclear weapons—which is unacceptable to use—was a mistake, and he should have apologized to the Japanese people from the bottom of his heart. At least one word about it. America, which dropped atomic bombs, has never apologized! It must apologize,” Suzuki told Sputnik.https://sputnikglobe.com/20240809/us-must-apologize-to-japanese-people-for-atomic-bombings—-lawmaker-suzuki-1119688018.html

”[Japan’s Prime Minister] Fumio Kishida often says that he is ‘the prime minister from Hiroshima, which suffered from nuclear weapons.’ But it was the United States that made Hiroshima suffer from nuclear weapons. And he should tell America that it must apologize to the Japanese people... Next year will mark the 80th anniversary of the bombing. And I believe that the United States must apologize and express regret,” he said.

Suzuki slammed the hypocrisy of the G7 countries for not attending the Nagasaki ceremony, because of the fact that Israel was not invited.

“If you tell the mayor of Nagasaki that if he doesn’t invite Israel, we won’t come either, then say that Russia and Belarus were not invited to the ceremony. The G7 ambassadors, starting with the U.S. ambassador, should have said that this is unfair and that they will boycott the Hiroshima ceremony. Then a fair balance would be struck,” Suzuki said.

He added that the essence of the peace ceremony, held on the anniversaries of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was for countries to seek peace with each other.

Suzuki is the founder of a Japanese-Russian friendship society. He was a member of the Japanese innovation party but resigned after visiting Russia in 1023. He remains a member of the Japanese upper house, representing Hokkaido.
